How do I get started finding my family genealogy?

I have fooled around on line trying to find out more about my parents parents (immigrants from Scotland and Ireland) but I found it confusing and hard to get started. Where is a place for a beginner to start? Is it worth it to hire someone to do this. I’m retired and have a lot of time if that is all it takes.

How do I get started doing genealogy if I don’t know anyone?

All I have is up to my grandparents on both my mom and dads side. Where do I go from there? How do I possibly find who there parents were and what not?
I can’t ask the oldest member in my family she has Alzheimer’s and doesn’t even know me.
