Where should I get started in finding my genealogy?

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009
Leafy asked:

I know my mom’s side. My dad’s side, though, is what I want to know. My dad doesn’t know much about it, and whenever I ask my grandfather, he just tells us “My dad came from Armenia” and changes the subject because he’s embarrassed his family came from the Middle East.

I have a strange last name and only my grandfather’s first name to go by. Where should I start?

Oh, and I can’t pay for anything, either!

Nicole asked:

I am trying to research my family and I came upon my great great grandmother’s name in a handmade birth listing in an old family bible. It was great because it had her arrival date to America and name of the ship. I looked it up but she was not there. Now I am stuck. The writer of the book got it from her mother who has already passed.

Lola asked:

Unexpected places can lead to great breakthroughs, like checking my gr-gr-gr-grandfather’s brother’s commitment to an county old age home, led me to discover they weren’t the only ones to come to America? What led you to your breakthroughs?
A source that really helped me was my grandmother’s funeral book. Her sister who died a short time later filled in the family section.

My family is paranoid about identity theft and won’t tell me anything about themselves or others in the family? Makes it really hard to do a genealogy. Are their fears justified?
