I am looking for ideas for a birthday present for a friend who is very interested in genealogy. He spends hours and hours researching his family. I was thinking of a filing system, as he prints out many documents, but would that be useful and “gifty” enough? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

How about a large tapestry where you could put the family tree on?
Here is a site that offers gifts for genealogists.
How about a gift subscription to an online resource? If he/she keeps his records on computer, a USB key to assist in tranporting information from one computer to another might be useful. If he has a collection of photos he has gathered on his various lines perhaps he is anxious to share the information. Perhaps purchasing a year’s subscription to a site like My Ancestors (http://www.myheritage.com/FP/Company/genealogy.php) would be cool.
Last, but not least, how about a family tree plaque at?
Good luck!
A book gift certificate through his favorite genealogy society.
A year subscription to at least census through ancestry.com
Ask what research book/volume he really covets, how much it is … conversationally. Write a check to cover the book purchase. Gift wrap.
Membership at NEHGS
Membership at any favorite genealogy society with monthly type publications
The whole trick is act interested - active listening - and you’ll learn what it is he’d love to have.
I would also suggest a subscription to an online resource like or something similar that would be helpful in his research.
Good luck,
Dave

Since my family never had a family bible, I always envied those who did. Maybe giving him one of those would be a great gift so that he could fill in several generations and have something beautiful to pass on to his children.
If someone suggests and they might eventually a family crest or coat of arms. Don’t, If your friend knows anything about genealogy he will know it is phony.
There is no such thing as a family crest. Not everyone with the same surname comes from the same root. There are no laws in the United States regarding heraldry
and there are companies that will sell one based solely on a surname without documented proof that a person is entitled to it. It is not illegal but it is very dishonest.
My birthday has just gone and I had the best presents I could have had, my husband got me a FILING CABINET, I love it. My paperwork is now totally organised, the study is now tidy and I can pull any document I need within moments, go for the filing system. My son got me three Cd’s from our local family history society, they are excellent.
