Is it possible to get a birth certificate using only a social security number for genealogy purposes?

Brynnistic asked:

I’m tracing my family tree and found a great great great grandmother in the SSDI (Social Security Death Index) but it has her married name. I’d like to know her maiden name so that I can continue tracing the line.

Sometimes the mother and father’s name is on the ssdi also but you would need a copy of the death certificate or you can go to- its the morman site but you don’t have to be morman to use it.You may luck out and find her maiden name

If your great great grandmother was on SSDI she made out a social security application form and it will have various information such as:

The application form (SS-5) contains the following information:
    • Full name
    • Full name at birth (including maiden name)
    • Present mailing address
    • Age at last birthday
    • Date of birth
    • Place of birth (City, county, state)
    • Fathers full name “regardless of whether living or dead”
    • Mothers full name, including maiden name, “regardless of whether living or dead”
    • *** and race
    • Ever applied for SS number/Railroad Retirement before? Yes/No
    • Current employers name and address
    • Date signed
    • Applicants signature

Social Security Administration now charges $27.00 for each individual copy.

    Good luck.

You might try for an obituary via the Ancestry or GenForum query boards for the county in which she died. Many counties have people who will look up obits out of the goodness of their hearts. You’ll need her exact death date, since no one is going to wade through a month’s worth of microfilm unless you pay them. The obit may mention her married name. It might even mention her parents. If she is survived by one or more brothers, that will be a clue too. It won’t be a certainty because obits don’t distinguish between brothers and half brothers.

The SSN app is surer and more accurate. The Obit is cheaper.
