Have you used a genealogy site to test your DNA?

What where the results, was it worth the money? Would you recommend it. Your thoughts in general would be much appreciated.

I did one of those son of a son of a son . . . tests. If enough male Pack descendants do it, and we get enough 37-point matches, we can be reasonably sure my 7th great grandfather, Samuel Pack, was a son, grandson or nephew of a fellow who was in Maryland in 1714 - 1754. Samuel is a brick wall for dozens of us Pack researchers.

It was worth it to me, but not everyone wants to spend $300 to break through a brick wall. The genealogy bug bites some people harder than others. The “Heritage” portion told me what I already knew; that I’m basically Northern European (English, German, French . . .), with some bits of this and that here and there.

I did it, and found they were able to accurately say I have English, Scots, Irish, Dutch, and German ancestry, although most of those are not at all obvious from my name. They also said I had some remote Scandinavian, Mongol (!) and one Jewish ancestor, way back. I can’t possibly document the last couple, since they presumably go back to the Mongol invasions of Europe, but if you want to know these things, it is worth doing.

I did it and it was worth it to me. My test was done at the urging of two researchers who were trying to tie their ancestors into a branch of mine. Our test indicated that there was no relationship. One of us had to have incorrect information. Subsequent testing to other individuals has proved that my data is correct. Although their data seems solid we have not been able to explain why their DNA doesn’t match ours.
My wife also has my surname in one of her ancestor lines. We tried to connect the two lines for over 30 years before DNA testing proved that there is no connection.
It is not cheap but can be very useful. Look at a web site that is researching your surname to see how many particiants it has. If only a few it may not be worth it.
