I live in Canada and am interested in using one of those genealogy sites to track personal ancestry. Are there any good “free” online services available for use.

A couple good ones to start with is, and both are free, the other one that is really great, but other than a free trial, they charge for membership.
I would recommend that you look at ancestry.com. While it is not totally free it does help.
Familysearch.com is the one i’ve had the most luck with, not to mention it is totally free. The only downside to it is if you have a common surname, such as Smith or Johnson. The less common, the better. If online sites arent working for you, living family members are a very good way to go. As a tip, be sure to write down any stories or events older family members recall, as grandparents. can be a wealth of information.
If you want to get the most bang for your buck, try its cheaper then the other sites and will give you 3x more data. Works real well.. hope this helps!
