Differently-abled musician asked:

When a close friend died she entrusted me with secrets. However, she made it very clear I was not to write them. Now I feel I wish to reveal the least embarrassing part of the genealogy. Is it right for me to post it?
Or should I just keep the secret buried?

President elect asked:

All I have is up to my grandparents on both my mom and dads side. Where do I go from there? How do I possibly find who there parents were and what not?
I can’t ask the oldest member in my family she has Alzheimer’s and doesn’t even know me.

An S asked:

I have Jewish relatives that were kicked out of Russia at the turn of the century. I have actually traced them to a town in the Ukraine that was at times considered Russian and at times considered part of Belarus. I am told that there are mass graves in the area from WWII. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do I contribute to the free genealogy data on the web?

Ted Pack asked:

For every privilege there is a corresponding responsibility. If I want the privilege of free genealogical data on the web, it is my responsibility to contribute to it.

I look up obituaries for people who post requests for them on my county’s GenForum board. I post well-researched answers to queries on three surname-based boards. I transcribed 10 pages of the 1850 Monroe County Va. (Now WV) census.

Does anybody else who uses YA besides RustSkipper give back a little?

The “Ask a Question” form here tells me “No similar question found”. THAT’s a surprise. Next it is going to tell me the Pope is Catholic and bears relieve thelselves in the woods.
I just wanted to see the question here once. Best answer was a toss-up between Margie and Len, literally. I have a 1948 Florin I use for that, king on one side, rose on the other. Len won. Thanks, you two.

Sun flower asked:

I am doing research on my family’s heritage. I want to learn how to preform a better search. Do you know any good sources? So far, most of the information I have has been given to me by family members, and the wonderful people from this sight. BTW, thanks for all the help. I want to be able to contribute to the search.
Thank you Nothing.
The way I underststand it, we have just about everything in our hertage. So the info you gave will be VERY helpful.
Windy C, That is a wonderful ideal. I can’t remember ever having a reunion for my dad’s side of the family. I’ll have to try and find some of the older members of my family so they can help me track down everyone. How wonderful it would be to meet members of my family I haven’t got to meet yet.

Thanks for your help.

There are a ton of websites, books, references, etc, and it’s somewhat overwhelming. I’m literally just getting started here, and I’m curious: when just starting off with a genealogy search, what’s the best way to begin?

Courtney asked:

My boyfriend is very much interested in genealogy and I want to get him a genealogy gift for Christmas. If I buy him genealogy software, such as Legacy, will he be able to search for ancestors? Or is genealogy software only a way to organize family trees? Also, what is a good genealogy search site that I could buy him a subscription to? Thanks for any help.
